Councilman Casim L. Gomez

4th Ward

Councilman Casim Gomez is a staunch community advocate that has been leading a progressive agenda focused on land use, redevelopment, and economic development in the City of East Orange.  He’s served on City Council since 2015 and has worked diligently to create policies and legislation to improve the EO community.

Having served as the Chair of the Business Development and Zoning (BDZ) Sub-Committee and on the City’s Planning Board, Gomez has kept the East Orange citizens’ interest at heart in all his decisions.  During his tenure on City Council, BDZ, and the Planning Board, Gomez was deeply involved in a variety of projects that changed EO’s economic landscape. He has earned a reputation as a strong policymaker who takes difficult issues and gets results for EO residents.

Through Councilman Gomez’s leadership of the BDZ, he deliberated close to $2 billion dollars in redevelopment project approvals—including the $500M Brick Church Redevelopment project.  He was involved in promoting the redevelopment of blighted, underutilized, and vacant properties in the Greenwood Redevelopment Area. He facilitated negotiations that sought to improve the housing quality and affordability in the City, to name a few.

Among the recent developments, Gomez worked with the Mayor, Administration, Planning Department Staff, and his Council colleagues to set a path forward to producing programs and activities that will attract new development opportunities.

Additional accomplishments include:

  • 67 South Munn (Corinthian Towers).  A project to preserve and significantly rehabilitate a 10-story family apartment building containing 221 affordable housing units.

  • 160 Halsted Street. This development was built in partnership with the East Orange Housing Authority (EOHA) and is a 60-unit new multi-family senior dwelling. The dwelling will provide 100% affordable housing and accommodate the needs of residents with disabilities.

  • 55 Washington Street. This development will oversee the conversion of a vacant office building into a high-rise, 91-unit multi-family dwelling. The dwelling is located in the Transit Village District, which will afford its residents better access to public transportation with its close proximity to the Brick Church train station.

  • 118 & 120 North 15th Street. This is a development proposed by Upper Greenwood Realty, LLC, a minority-owned and operated development company. The development is a two-family new-construction residential dwelling located in the Greenwood Redevelopment District.

Councilman Gomez demonstrates a true passion for East Orange and its residents, and he will continue to champion the needs of our residents in 2023.
